MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A woman was shot and killed at Shelby Farms Park on Saturday afternoon, according to Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting happened around 12:15 p.m. in the parking lot of the Visitor Center at Shelby Farms Park.
The woman was pronounced deceased on the scene by Memphis Fire Department paramedics.
The suspect drove away from the scene. This is an ongoing investigation.
According to an eyewitness statement, the woman killed was a participant in a walk for Breast Cancer Survivors at Shelby Farms.
The eyewitness added that the suspect was in a white vehicle, fired shots, and then sped away.
In an update, SCSO says that a person of interest has been detained in Dyer County in connection to the shooting.
Shelby Farms Park released the following statement:
We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at the Park in the Visitor Center parking lot today.
There is no threat to visitor or public safety. This is an active investigation and we are referring all questions to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
