
A man faced charges in a double shooting Sunday that left one person dead and one person injured in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
Jarrod Hegarty, 32, of Townsend, was charged with two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a firearm and possession of a firearm without an FID card.
Two men were found suffering from gunshot wounds at 6:40 p.m. in the area of 360 Main St.
Surveillance video of the incident shows a group of men standing in front of an apartment building when gunshots are fired, sending the men scrambling. Two men are hit.
One man was taken to UMass Memorial HealthAlliance – Leominster Campus, where he was pronounced dead. The second victim was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where he was listed in critical condition.
Officials said Hegarty was identified as the offender and it was reported that he was still in a nearby building. Just before 1 a.m. Monday, officials said Hegarty left the building and surrendered to authorities.
Hegarty was held without bail at his arraignment in Fitchburg District Court. He will return to court Oct. 25.
