Woman and infant dead, three other children hurt in crash at 19th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road

A woman and infant have died and three other children are hurt after a crash at the intersection of 19th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road Friday afternoon, according to Phoenix police.

Police were called to the area around 1:20 p.m. for the crash involving a silver sedan and a black pickup truck.

Police say a 25-year-old woman and her infant in the sedan were taken to a hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. The woman and the two-month-old later died at the hospital.

Three other children were also hospitalized, and their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Phoenix police identified the victims Saturday as 25-year-old Kristina Lara and 2-month-old Josiah Lara.

Police believe a 23-year-old man was driving the sedan at a high rate of speed southbound on 19th Avenue and accelerated on a yellow light when witnesses say he crashed into a black pickup truck.

The man driving the black pickup truck was attempting to make a left turn onto Lower Buckeye. He was not hurt.

Authorities told ABC15 at the scene that the children were not in safety seats.

Officials say a final charging decision will be made once the crash reconstruction is completed.
