Shooting in parking lot of Painesville Riverview Elementary prompts lockdown

Authorities say a domestic dispute led to a shooting in the parking lot of Riverview Elementary School in Painesville on Thursday morning.

Students and staff were not harmed in the incident, which began about 9:10 a.m., officials said.

Lake County sheriff’s deputies say a person was arrested, and the school was placed in a lockdown afterward. It was lifted later in the day.

Gabe Cicconetti, a Painesville Township trustee, said in an online post that “this was an isolated incident (of a) suspected domestic dispute between two parents.”

Authorities said the dispute began away from the school and continued into the parking lot. During the argument, a shot was fired in a direction away from the school, officials said.

A school resource officer, who is a Lake County sheriff’s deputy, arrested the suspect shortly after the shooting.

No serious injuries were reported.

Riverside officials said the school immediately went into a lockdown.

“There is no further threat to the school, and Riverview Elementary is no longer on lockdown,” the district said on its Facebook page at 11:30 a.m.

“The school day will continue as normal, however if parents would like to pick-up their child, they can come to the school and sign them out.”
