The city is in mourning after the first Montreal police officer is killed in the line of duty in over two decades.
The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) and the entire city are mourning the devastating loss of Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouane. He is the first Montreal police officer to be killed in the line of duty in more than twenty years.
Honoring Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouane
Constable Benredouane, 34, was fatally wounded during the immediate police intervention. According to SPVM officials, Benredouane and his partner rushed to the scene near a local hotel to confront the active threat. Police leadership commended his ultimate sacrifice, stating he died valiantly placing himself between the gunman and the public.
Benredouane had proudly served with the SPVM since 2021. Tributes have quickly flooded social media, featuring photographs of the young constable in his formal dress uniform—a somber reminder of a dedicated career cut tragically short.
During the intense exchange of gunfire, Benredouane’s partner, a female SPVM officer, was also seriously wounded. She was transported to a local trauma center, though her current condition has not been publicly detailed.
Civilian Victim Identified
The violence also claimed the life of an innocent civilian. Local reports have identified the victim as Rabbi Michael Moshe Mizrahi. Preliminary details indicate he was tragically killed in the vicinity of nearby Jewish community sites during the chaotic events that led to the police response.
The loss of Rabbi Mizrahi has deeply shaken the local community, prompting an outpouring of condolences and calls for solidarity during this dark hour.
The Investigation and Suspect Motives
The suspect responsible for the fatal shootings was also killed during the gun battle with responding officers. While authorities have not officially released the gunman’s name, deeply troubling details regarding his potential motives are beginning to emerge.
The shooting initially triggered terrifying shelter-in-place alerts across the Côte-des-Neiges area. As the investigation progresses, preliminary law enforcement sources suggest the heavily armed suspect may have specifically targeted police officers. Furthermore, investigators are currently looking into reports that the suspect distributed a manifesto related to the “incel” (involuntary celibate) extremist ideology prior to the attack.
The SPVM and provincial investigative bodies are conducting a massive, comprehensive review of the crime scene and the suspect’s digital footprint.
We will provide further updates regarding the investigation, memorial services for Constable Benredouane, and the condition of the wounded female officer as official statements are released by the SPVM.
